Leesville Road High School Bands Club Newsletter SEPTEMBER 2006
A message from the President
Welcome to another exciting year of band at Leesville Road High School. We have three bands again this year consisting of a total of 176 students (to date). We have a Bands Club Booster group comprised of the parents of these bands. This is a great group of parents that support our bands. I encourage all parents of students in any of our three bands to come to the Bands Club meetings. The meetings are held the third Tuesday of every month unless we have a day off of school. They are held in or near the band room at 7 p.m. Our first meeting is on September 19th at 7pm. During the meetings we often have one of the bands or a musical ensemble perform. We will discuss fundraising opportunities, spring trip details, upcoming performances and more… Scrip orders and grocery cards are usually available for pickup. There are some opening spots on our committees: Newsletter/Publicity - Kim Nagy would like a co-chair Hospitality – 9th grade band – needs a chair - helps with concerts and banquets Performance – 9th grade band – needs a chair – helps with selling tickets for concerts Photographer – 9th grade band – needs a chair – takes photos during performances Sweet Tomatoes Sales – needs a chair - helps sell our Sweet Tomatoes coupons If you are interested in any of the positions above – please contact me – Brenda Fanning at 846-8632 or at bfanning@nc.rr.com. Thanks. There are 2 main vehicles for communication in our band. The Yahoo groups and our website. We will be sending information concerning concerts, trips, and fundraising through the Yahoo group. (SEE INFORMATION BELOW ON HOW TO SIGN UP). Also, please take the time to check out our website at www.leesvilleband.org A Special THANK YOU to all the band volunteers! Brenda Fanning How to join the LHS Bands Yahoo Group This is the way to get timely emails on fund raising information, events, and general information that you need about your specific band. There are 2 ways to join a Yahoo group -- either one is very easy! 1. Click on the link for your band on the LRHS website: http://www.leesvilleband.org/. Go to the bottom of the page and click on the Band link you desire: Symphonic, Concert, 9th grade, or Alumni. Fill in your student's name and send the email and I'll send you an invitation within a day or 2. 2. Or you can email me directly from the email account you want to use, include the band group you want to join, and I'll send you an invitation to join. Send the email to jwheeler@nc.rr.com. It only takes a minute or two, and soon you'll be connected to all that's going on with the Leesville Road High School Bands! Fall is a busy time, so join now! Jackie Wheeler Finances – from the Student Accounts Manager It is long but REALLY important – Please Read Band Costs - - - Fair Share and Overnight Competitions As we know, North Carolina and Wake County Schools do not come close to providing the funds to support the kind of band program that our children deserve and our parents expect. In order that we maintain the level of consistency in education we see in our band program, each year parents are expected to contribute funds to support this program. This is standard procedure within all successful high school band programs. This contribution is called “fair share” and is calculated based upon the projected expenses for participation in each band program. These fees are different for each band, and are determined based on what the needs of each band are. Some of the things we are able to do include purchase and maintenance of school instruments, purchase of music, expenses associated with concerts including lighting technicians, state contest entrance fees, transportation and much more! Fair Share ’06-’07: Symphonic Band is $250 Concert band is $50 9th Grade Band is $50 We ask that parents pay their fair share prior to October 15th. It is important that this deadline be honored. This fee needs to be paid prior to any commitments of our students to participate in spring trips or overnight competitions. These trip costs will be assessed IN ADDITION TO the fair share, and collections for them will probably begin as early as November. If you raise funds through our band sponsored fundraising events, these dollars will continue to be credited to your account. At the end of the year, any excess funds in your account can be rolled over to next year, OR graduating seniors are eligible for refund of any cash payments that you have made throughout the year. Making Payments We have several options for making payments for Fair Share and Spring Trips to your student accounts.
Kim Jones 2000 Pearl Crescent Ct. Raleigh, NC 27613 846-1765 Please include your student’s name on the memo of the check.
Student Accounts Update Student accounts provide a record of all payments made to pay "fair share" charges and spring trip expenses, including both checks received and band sponsored fundraising. Each month the activity for your student's account is updated and available for your review via a link on the Leesville Bands website www.leesvilleband.org. Follow the links through the Band Club to Student Accounts. To maintain confidentiality, each student is assigned a number that is used to access the account. If your student is a returning band student, the account number will remain the same. If you have lost your number or are a new student to the band, you can email judsonjones@mindspring.com and I will gladly send your number to you. One more reason to attend Bands Club meeting…I will have your current statements printed with the student account number on it available for you to pick up! If you have more than one student in the bands, please let your fundraising chairpersons know how you would like your money/hours split between the students at the time you work or purchase your grocery cards. We can make transfers between sibling’s accounts, but you must request this from Kim Jones. I am looking forward to working with you and your students this school year. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at any time! THOUGHT ABOUT STARTING YOUR HOLIDAY SHOPPING EARLY? “SCRIP” is a great way to do it! Consider spreading out those holiday expenses by buying gift cards early for those “hard-to-shop-for” people on your list – and put money in your student’s account at the same time! Also consider using scrip to pay for those everyday expenses, like gas, dining, movies, clothing – even travel (business or personal) and home improvement. And once again, you can do so while adding money to your student’s account. How does scrip work? You purchase the gift card at face value, but the “discount” – typically from about 2 or 3% up to 15% or even higher, of your purchase – goes directly into your student’s account. An easy way to make purchases, and an easy way to save! This month’s scrip schedule is as follows: Turn in scrip orders in the band room this week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (September 11 – 13). Your scrip will be ready for pick-up at the Bands Club meeting on Tuesday, September 19, and after school on September 20th. For more complete information on how to make scrip work for YOU, please visit the band website at www.leesvilleband.org. Click on “Bands Club,” then “Fundraisers,” where you’ll find lots of information on the scrip program (including the Scrip Order Form). If you need additional help or clarification, please contact Linda Tesh at mtesh@nc.rr.com or 676-3899. And finally, if you’d like to work with a fun group, consider volunteering to help on the Scrip Committee. As you can guess, our busiest time is November and December, when we could use some extra hands with scrip sorting. It’s an easy, fun job that takes only a few hours on a weekday morning. Please contact Linda Tesh if you’d like more information on volunteering – we’d appreciate your help! Fruit and Poinsettia Sales are just around the corner. Students will be able to raise funds to help pay for their portion of Fairshare and the spring trip. Prices are being set and the sale will run during the month of October with delivery in early December. Students can earn 40-50% off this sale. We will need help in Nov. with money collection and in Dec. during delivery. Please consider helping to make this fundraiser a success for all the students. RBC Center The Leesville Band group will run concession stands during events at the RBC Center, such as the NCSU basketball games and Caroline Hurricanes hockey. Training for events without alcohol is provided on-the-job, but additional training is provided through free ALE classes at the RBC Center for all events that involve alcohol sales. The available dates for ALE training in September are the 12th, 13th, 18th, 19th, 26th, and 27th, and reservations are required. Notices of dates available to work are sent out through the Yahoo groups, and money earned is deposited in the individual student's account. This is a fun way to earn band money and meet other parents. (Students must be at least 18 to work at any of the events.) If you would like more information, please contact co-chair Frank Just at 845-6803 or Sandy Shojinaga at 676-1519. News from the symphonic band hospitality As co-chairs of the Symphonic Band Hospitality Committee, Amy Perkins and I would like to welcome you as we begin another year in a wonderful band program! A special welcome to all of you who are new to Symphonic Band this year! Boy, do we have opportunities for you as parents to be involved in band life with your students! We need volunteers to: (1) Serve drinks to the band at home football games, (2) Bake goodies for competitions, (3) Set up, clean up or help serve at banquets and (4) Provide a small token of appreciation to the LHS teachers from the Bands Club during Teacher Appreciation Week. We also ask every student to donate a 12-pack of water, Sprite or Coke to be used at the games and competitions. Fliers are sent home every so often to let you know when it's time to send in drinks so we don't overwhelm our small storage area. (If you think you've missed the flier, feel free to write and I'll catch you up on dates. Just tell me what instrument your student plays.) If you have questions or would like to volunteer for any of the above, please e-mail me at Lpoverturf@aol.com. We're looking forward to a great year! ~Lynn Overturf UPCOMING EVENTS: September 19 – Bands Club Meeting – Concert Band performs 7:00 pm September 22 – Football Game – Band Senior Night 7:00 pm September 30 – Symphonic Band Plays for USO Show October 6 – Football Game - Homecoming 7:00 pm October 7 – Marching Band Contest – Wakefield October 17 – Bands Club Meeting – 9th grade band performs 7:00 pm October 20 – Football Game 7:00 pm October 21 – Marching Band Contest – Shelby October 28 – Marching Band Contest – Sanderson
