Audition and Registration

>>> What do I need to do to be in Symphonic Band?

Students will need to audition to be in the Symphonic Band. They will need to contact Ms. Montgomery ( amontgomery@wcpss.net ) in January/Early February to set up an audition.

Symphonic Band Audition Requirements (FEBRUARY 9th, 10th, and 11th, and 16th):

  • Brass/Woodwind Players: Perform 12 major scales and chromatic scale (two octave range) and a short solo of your choice to show your musicality. Your private instructor or band director can assist you in finding a suitable selection. Students will also be asked to sight-read a selection during the audition.
  • Percussionists: Perform 12 major scales and chromatic scale (two octave range) on a mallet percussion instrument. All percussionists should demonstrate the ability to tune and perform a short timpani solo, perform a rudimentary snare drum solo, and a short xylophone/marimba solo. Students will also be asked to sight-read a selection during the audition.

>>> What do I need to do to be in Ninth Grade Band or Concert Band?

You DO NOT NEED TO AUDITION for Ninth Grade Band IF you have PRIOR band experience. If for some reason you did not take band in 8th grade or the previous year to your current year, Ms. Montgomery will need to hear you play during the month of May. Beginning Band is not a band option at Leesville. You must have prior experience on an instrument.

Ninth Grade Band/Concert Band Audition Requirements if NO School Band experience the previous year (To be held in MAY):

  • Brass/Woodwind Players: 6 major scales (C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db concert), chromatic scale (two octave range), short solo of your choice to show your musicality and a sight-reading selection.
  • Percussionists: 6 major scales (C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db concert), chromatic scale (two octave range) on a mallet percussion instrument and two short solos on two different of the following instruments of your choice to show your musicality: demonstrate the ability to tune and perform a short timpani solo AND/OR perform a rudimentary snare drum solo AND/OR a short xylophone/marimba solo. Students will also be asked to sight-read a selection during the audition.

Please click on About Our Bands to read about each ensemble. See our homepage for the date and time of our New Parent Meetings in the LRHS Band Studio for all new Parents!

At the audition process, an ensemble placement will be made. Each ensemble carries the same class registration number so no matter which ensemble the student is placed in, the numbers are the same. We place them in either the Symphonic Band Section, the Concert Band Section, or the Ninth Grade Band Section depending on their audition.

All Musical Ensembles are a YEAR LONG in length. Please use the following when registering for classes:
